  Texas Instruments Street Lighting Solution Using UCC28600

Introduction

With international drive towards a society of energy conservation, partly due to the fact that fuel for energy has been escalating from year to year to the extend that the issue cannot be ignored. Thus energy efficient systems has grown more prominent in recent years even with higher cost of material.

Lighting solutions has seen dramatic changes since the end of last century. Incandescence were a common sight until the early 90s. Now you can hardly find the existence of this technology. Majority of lighting systems have been replaced with light source of higher efficiency such as Fluorescent and Compact Fluorescent.

With more awareness is given to the move towards a greener world, Electronics is turning to another sub-technology to push efficiency further, Light Emitting Diode (LED), thus the development of high brightness LED poise as replacement of Compact Fluorescent.




TI LED Street Lighting solution

The principle of LED lighting is an adaptation of an existing solution on Power Management System. The requirement for lighting a series of LEDs in a mesh configuration merely needs the right voltage and current setting of which TI’s Power Management System is the right candidate for the job.

The structure of TI’s street lighting solution base on UCC28600 consisting of components common to standard switch mode power supply. The only difference is the need to reconfigure various components such as MOSFET, Transformers specification to meet the right power requirement.

 

The power rating of 120W, 19.9V output for UCC28600 Demonstration Kit speaks volume for designers in this field as the market requirement is reaching 100W to cater for a vase number of 100 LEDs with 1W per unit. UCC28600 provides an ideal platform for designers to begin their work since it is easier to down-grade than up-grade the specification.


The TI UCC28600 solution is as what we see a production ready solution with only need for minor modification to customer’s requirement. With the capability of D & P in present days, it is an easy task for us to help our customers to achieve their goal in creation of a LED lighting solution
